When the 1960’s British Invasion hit worldwide, Herman’s Hermits were one of the biggest groups out of the UK. Their Australian No. 1 hits, ‘Mrs. Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter’ and ‘No milk today’, both released in 1965, made the group one of the most popular groups of the day here in Australia.
Herman’s Hermits first toured Australia with Welsh crooner Tom Jones and his band The Squires in the summer of 1966 on Harry J. Miller’s ‘Caravan of Stars 66’ tour with New Zealand artist Ray Columbus in support. The tour kicked off at Sydney Showground on Friday 21 January before moving on to Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and finally Perth.
It was on that tour, while in Melbourne, that they recorded a live television special sponsored by Hilton Hosiery at the GTV-9 TV studio. It would later air on 17 April and 18 April in Melbourne and Sydney respectively.
During the performance the group sang some of the songs which had catapulted them to international fame while excited fans threw streamers at the group. Songs include:
Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat, Jezebel, A Must To Avoid, I’m Into Something Good, Listen People, Silhouettes, Wonderful World, I’m Talking About You, and Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter.
