When Hobart Town was founded in 1804, many of the early settlers erected their tents along what is now that portion of Collins St., between Elizabeth and Murray streets. The Hobart Rivulet, from which the infant town drew its water supply, flowed through the area, and this, incidentally, was responsible for the foundation of some of the early commercial enterprises.
Collins Street was named in December 1811, by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, of New South Wales, in honour of the founder of Hobart, Lieut.-Colonel David Collins, of the Royal Marines. [‘The History of Collins St.’, The Mercury (Hobart), Tuesday 18 April 1939, pg. 13.]
