John Saddler was an English engraver working in line and mezzotint; he was known for working with a number of famous artists of the time such as Turner.

John J. Crew, Engraver

John J. Crew was an English engraver commissioned by Edwin Carton Booth for his book “Australia” published in 1873, and the subsequent colourised volumes entitled “Australia Illustrated” produced between 1874-76.

James Howe Carse Artist

James Howe Carse was born in about 1819 in Edinburgh. In the early 1860s he exhibited paintings of Scotland and England in London, and by 1869 he had visited both Australia and New Zealand.

Thomas Baines Gallery

Thomas Baines was born on the 27th November 1820, in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. In 1842, inspired by other explorer artists, he left England bound for Cape Town where he worked as an artist, undertaking three journeys to the interior between 1848 and 1850. Returning to Australia in 1855 he joined the North Australian Expedition to evaluate the entire northern area of Australia in terms of its suitability for colonial settlement.

Nicholas Chevalier Gallery

Nicholas Chevalier was born on 9 May 1828, in St Petersburg, Russia. Arriving in late 1854 he worked as a cartoonist on the newly established Melbourne Punch. Later he did illustrative work for the Illustrated Australian News and also worked in chromo-lithography.
